The Claassen technique

The Claassen technique is a presentation technique created by Remco Claassen. It's along the lines of the following (But for real comprehension, it's best to read his book):

Think about what kind of audience will attend. Adjust your use of jargon accordingly.

Do, Don't or Never Forget

Start and end your talk with what the guests should:

O do
O Don't

Or

O never forget

Basically any talk/presentation has one of these three as goal. So know which is your goal and make sure that it comes across.

Think of max. 5 information points you want to get across.

Connect

Start each segment of your talk with a question towards the audience. Maybe follow up questions as well.

"Why? What? Where? How?"

Then something like:

"In this talk we will explore these answers"

And then end this intro with:

"These answers will help/make you/the world" (insert -er words like better, faster, smarter, cheaper, easier, bigger, smaller, etc)

Information

After these intro's you can start talking about you actual information.

Best way to end an information segment is an anecdote. People loooooove anecdotes. Really helps giving life to your presentation.

Reconnect

After getting some information across, you could potentially do a "reconnect" by again asking a question, remind them of a do, don't or never forget, remind them you are going to tell them more about this and why it will help them by the hand of -er words.

This keeps concentration high.

O New info
O Anecdote
O Reconnect
O Repeat.

Ending

End with the why's and what's and give a quick re-tour of your answers or new questions that arise from them. Remind them your do, don't or never forget. And then end with why all this will help/make them/the world -er words.

Preparation Sheet

To help yourself remember this, instead of writing your presentation in long sentences, you could try to do it with key words in this kind of setup:

Intro

Why ... what ... where.. how...

Do/don't/never forget

-er words

Info ...

Anecdote ...

Reconnect

Info ...

Anecdote ...

Why what where how

Re-tour answers

Do/don't/never forget

-er words

Example:

A presentation about eating healthy

Intro - I'm ... and eat healthy

Why - would you? what - can you eat? How - stay motivated?

Do - start eating healthy

I will now tell how you can...

-er words - healthier (duhuh) lose weight faster, live longer, feel better, etc

Info - research says health food helps live longer and feel better

Anecdote - i had depression, now not any more

Reconnect

How motivated?

Start eating healthy and keep at it

Tell you how now

To keep at it longer, better, etc

Info - tips for motivation

Anecdote - helped me, eat healthy 5 years

So Why what where how

Re-tour answers

Do

-er words

Thank you
